Council Votes To Transfer Land To Complete Flood Project To State

Lawrenceburg leaders voted Thursday to transfer ownership of a couple of pieces of city-owned property to the State of Tennessee in order to complete their on-going flood control project.

Members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council voted unanimously to approve the  resolution. It allows ownership of two tracts of land in the area of East Gaines and Pulaski Streets to be transferred to the state.

The state will then replace an existing eight foot by eight foot box culvert with a twenty-foot one. EMA Director Joe Baxter told council members that replacement of the culvert is the last piece in the city’s flood control project. “It’s taken seven  years to get to this point,” Baxter explained.

The property was purchased after city leaders committed to the flood control project.

Various culverts, retention and detention ponds, and a lengthy channel have been constructed to funnel runoff water from city streets into Shoal Creek.

Replacement of the culvert will allow runoff water to move freely from the channel, beneath East Gaines Street and through a series of culverts into the creek.
